Coyote hunts need to end

Two coyote killing contests have been planned for the state of Nevada this month. A contest in Austin is scheduled for Oct. 7, and another will follow Nov. 10-11 in Las Vegas.

These contests serve no benefit to humans or to wildlife. They perform no function in wildlife management.

Coyotes can and do adjust their numbers without the help of humans, and are an important part of Nevada’s ecosystem.

Contests like this are cruel and inhumane, and should not be conducted for entertainment purposes. These contests often offer prizes and are conducted with a social party atmosphere.

Coyote killing contests spread a culture of violence and send the message to Nevada’s children that some life has little value and that an entire species of animals can be discarded with little thought.
