Letter to the editor:

It’s time to listen to young people

This year, a seismic shift is occurring: Young people are mobilizing politically. In the months since the Parkland, Fla., tragedy, the share of newly registered 18-29-year-old voters has surged nationwide, increasing 6.6 percent in Nevada. The fastest-growing, most diverse and most progressive voting bloc in the nation is joining the electoral fight.

Young people are rising up to combat the policies of President Donald Trump and Republicans like Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., including on issues such as health care, education and the environment. As this administration continues to attack fundamental rights, I am determined to fight for a more just and equal future for myself and my country.

I’ve met young people passionate about racial and social justice issues, immigration, and gun safety — and they’re ready not only to participate, but to lead the way.

Voting is the key to translating our generation’s immense energy into real change . In November, Washington will know a new and formidable force in American politics: the youth vote.
