LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Obama needs to fight back

In Gregory Clay’s Aug. 13 column, “Should Obama speak out more in defense of his legacy?” he cites how several ex-presidents in the modern era have vigorously defended their policies when attacked by their successors.

Former President Barack Obama’s presidency was a great and consequential one. The economy was on the verge of falling off a cliff; he saved it. The stock market more than doubled. Millions of previously uninsured Americans now have health insurance. The unemployment rate was cut roughly in half. We got out of Iraq. The leading symbol of terrorism, Osama bin Laden, was buried at sea.

Yet at every turn, President Donald Trump lambastes Obama’s record. Trump’s attacks, when unanswered, become truths in the minds not only of Trump’s base but also of those on the fence about Obama.

When they go low, go lower. Stoop down, Mr. Obama, and fight Trump in the mud. You will rally the Democratic base, not to mention the black community, which is reeling from the subtle dog whistles by Trump and his cohorts, and is looking for a credible leader.
