Social media has hurt democracy

The Aug. 16 editorial “Take it from the Founding Fathers: Journalists are Public Ally No. 1” misses the point. In today’s social media frenzy, which has promulgated “opinions” from both left- and right-leaning websites, the media has mostly sat on their hands in reporting actual news while lambasting our elected president.

The president is known to exaggerate to make his point. Who amongst us hasn’t done that? But his job performance has consistently followed his election promises.

No conservative expects to change even one liberal’s mind about our president. But the real enemy of our democracy and the news media may actually be social media, which allows inaccurate opinions and points of view to masquerade as facts.
