Letter to the editor:

State can lead on gun safety

Governor-elect Steve Sisolak and legislative Democrats have an opportunity to make a number of bold statements come next spring.

Nevada has the very realistic chance to strike the first national blow for meaningful, sensible and reasonable gun control. The Supreme Court has consistently ruled the Second Amendment gives most Nevadans the right to own firearms.

Despite claims to the contrary, no one of any reason argues for the confiscation of anyone’s guns.

However, in recent rulings the court has allowed that Second Amendment rights are not unlimited or sacrosanct.

A large majority of Nevadans believes the food chain feeding America’s gun appetite needs to be reduced. To achieve that end, a Second Amendment Reaffirmation and Gun Owner Liability Act should be enacted.

The SARGOLA would place clear, definable and enforceable obligations on Nevada gun owners and enumerate specific, required sanctions for its violation.

It is not a difficult concept to grasp. If you own a gun, you should be required to ssecure it, sell it or surrender it, or prepare for the consequence if you lose control of it.

The governor-elect and the incoming legislators need to take responsibility for reducing gun violence. Imposing obligations on gun owners is the surest route to a future with fewer unintentional firearm injuries.
