Letter to the editor:

Boomers aren’t all to blame

I tend to agree with Brian Greenspun that it would be fine if the baby boomers were to retire and leave their work to younger folks (“Boomers to blame for the mess we’re in,” July 15).

But as to the baby boomers screwing up the country, I think older generations had already covered that. World Wars I and II were fought to aid European countries which we had inexplicably agreed to defend.

The next was the Korean War, where we were trying to stop the spread of communism. Evidently, that pretext was politically popular, because then the president wanted to see communism could be stopped in southeast Asia.

The oldest boomer was born in 1946 — too young to have started the Vietnam War. So our next hot war was the Gulf War started by a certified boomer. And now at age 70, the boomers are leaving the stage, soon to be powerless to screw up much more.

Given that abbreviated history of our political screwups, explain how boomers did any worse than preceding generations.

As for the youthful generation which Greenspun appears to endorse, it has apparently decided that stopping communism was misguided, because the far left wing of the Democratic Party is embracing socialism, which is just a bus stop away from communism.
