The decision by the Supreme Court allowing legalized sports betting throughout the country raises an interesting question about nonsporting events.
There was a bill before the Nevada Legislature last session that would have allowed wagers on politics, but it didn’t gain any traction. There has also been discussion allowing bets on Academy Awards, but someone already knows the outcome and therefore such bets shouldn’t be allowed.
Still, offshore sites allow wagering on both politics and the Oscars, as well as other events.
The Nevada betting industry would have increased revenue if given the green light to allow wagering on nonsporting events, and maybe would draw some customers away from offshore websites.
