In the May 1 letter “National health care not feasible,” the writer says he “ doesn’t think that a national government-run health care system is the right choice,” based on his experience working for the Veterans Affairs Department.
He is probably right about that HMO-style behemoth. However, Medicare works great and offers a number of supplemental options from private companies that people can purchase to fill in the gaps based on medical need and pocketbook. The annual open enrollment allows changes when circumstances require them.
Extending Medicare to all, including private companies to compete, seems like a win-win for everyone.
