LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

It’s never too late to graduate

I loved your May 13 story on Anthony Lynn (“NFL head coach earns his degree from UNLV). He is very brave to take on getting his college degree while doing an excellent job coaching the Los Angeles Chargers. Both are full-time missions.

I, too, was the first in my family to go to college. And I didn’t start until my two oldest children started college. At one time, my four children and I were in four different colleges.

At the time, there were very few “older” students in college. The WWII veterans had finished their degrees. So the colleges again were mainly targeting high school graduates.

Then along came a few of us older “nontraditional” students. They didn’t know what to do with us. “Busy work” assignments were a pain to those of us already in the workplace and more experienced. I was even asked by professors what we thought might better help them fill our educational needs, especially us women.

As a graduate assistant, I taught a full load of three classes and took a full academic load of 12 to 15 class hours to earn my MBE.

Mr. Lynn, thank you for showing our “nontraditional” potential students that it is never too late to aspire to earn a college degree. You are our inspiration. Go for it.
