Letter to the editor:

Government is a work in progress

America’s Founding Fathers knew their experiment in governance could be tentative. Their challenge was to ensure that the framework could survive not just the founding but the test of time and cultures.

First, government must secure life, liberty and the right to pursue individual happiness. That’s the politics — and the Founders knew that if done right, it would take hard work and be hard earned, even if it takes war — and it did: the Civil War.

The founders knew, even with the right foundation and framework, the lesson of history dictates that the structures of law and constitutional order are never complete. They must be the ceaseless work of every generation.

To guarantee success, people must harness the power of government and the rules of political experts to shape society and civilization, and keep the people, willingly or not, in a higher state of being and life.
