Letter to the editor:

U.S. was doomed from the start

Regarding Brian Greenspun’s Oct. 28 column “Will America correct its mistake?” I certainly agree that the country seems be going to hell in a handbasket.

But I would be amazed if all the civilizations that ran their courses made the simple mistake of electing the wrong leader. If that’s what Greenspun learned from his three-week world tour, he ought to demand at least a partial refund.

The seeds of our country’s demise were planted hundreds of years ago, and the fate of the country was well-known at the country’s founding. Democracy allows voters to vote benefits for themselves without regard for their cost. Current examples include Democrats’ cries for Medicare for all, undiminished Social Security benefits regardless of increased longevity, and free education for all.

The problem lies with the pandering political class. The much maligned President Donald Trump will have no lasting effect on the country as long as democracy prevails and will not speed the country’s demise despite the outrage of Democrats.
