For seven years, Republicans promised to “repeal and replace” Obamacare. Now that Americans have experienced Obamacare, they like it. So, Republicans have gone silent. Now, they are lying about their intention to protect people with pre-existing conditions, not mentioning their legal actions to the contrary.
Remember how Republicans used to stand for “family values?” With twice-divorced Donald Trump accused of sexual assault and/or harassment by 20 women, his “Access Hollywood” taped comments on grabbing women by their genitals, the family values theme has left Republicans’ lips. The cruel separation of children from their parents at the border with no plan for reuniting them gives the lie to any Republican attachment to family values.
What about the party’s long-held fiscal conservatism? How does it jibe with the huge tax cut for corporations and the already wealthy that will lead, according to nonpartisan estimates, to record budget deficits exceeding $1 trillion? Not well.
What a dark turn the Republican Party has taken from its “city on the hill” days of optimism under Ronald Reagan.
