Letter to the editor:

Cherish, defend our right to vote

I contacted 1,092 people this fall in the fight for democracy.

As an intern for the national voting rights organization Let America Vote, I got to meet face-to-face with members of my community to ensure we elect leaders who will stand up for voting rights.

The most satisfying feeling was when I got the chance to hear voters’ stories. Nevada is such an interesting place when it comes to politics, and it’s interesting to hear about the many different viewpoints people have here. Also, I got to learn more about local elections, such as Assembly and state Senate races. If we truly want to make change, we have to start at home.

The fight for voting rights is real.

Gov. Brian Sandoval has been a very moderate Republican who wouldn’t pass any legislation that leaned too left or too right. But voter suppression is spreading across the country, and the only way to stop it is at the ballot box. Thankfully, Nevada voters passed Question 5, the “motor voter” initiative.

As my internship ends, my activism doesn’t. There’s always going to be so much I can do to ensure our rights and our democracy are protected. I’m always going to be grateful for Let America Vote for giving me as many opportunities as it did.
