Letter to the editor:

With rights come responsibilities

I am semiretired and came to the United States in 1957 from Mexico after I graduated from the University of Mexico.

Here, I obtained postgraduate medical education and specialization in the well-organized medical system of this country.

I was impressed with Americans’ high standards of morality, strong religious values, respect for law, organization, sense of responsibility and love for this great country.

I married and had children in Texas. I became a U.S. citizen in 1984. I am worried about the future of American society and the future of my children and grandchildren because of serious changes, mainly caused by politicians who have guided many people to become welfare dependent and irresponsible.

People’s concepts of their personal rights ignore that nobody should be entitled to those rights unless responsibilities are fulfilled. I raised my children knowing that they had to take care of their responsibilities before they could demand any rights.

We must do everything we can to protect and guide our society to make this nation as great as it was in the past.
