Letter to the editor:

Buyer beware on the beachfront

Thanks for publishing the article “How humans are making hurricanes worse” in the Sept. 21 edition of the Sun.

The article raises some excellent points, namely that human development in flood-prone areas greatly increases hurricane damage, including loss of life.

There is an easy and cheap way to limit damages to homes, businesses and infrastructure. Currently, homes in flood-prone areas can often be insured against flood damage.

So stop offering flood insurance through the government. Allow private insurers to market flood insurance at whatever price makes sense to them.

Some will say that unless subsidized, the cost would be prohibitively high. But why should a taxpayer in Las Vegas subsidize someone’s beachfront property in Florida?
