LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

How to know if you’re a racist

How many times does a person have to say something before he’s considered a racist? How many times can you defend something racist said by anyone you support before you finally admit that he or she is a racist? How many times can you defend those racist comments made by a political party you support before you realize that you’re a racist too?

The answers to these questions are subjective. But here’s a standard that anyone can use to help: Take the times a racist comment is made by someone and the times you defended those statements — either to yourself or out loud — and add them together. If you need more than eight fingers and two thumbs, just admit that that person is a racist.

And if you’re twisting yourself into knots to justify their actions and your support of them, take a long hard look in the mirror, because you’re staring at a racist, too. Complicity and support of people who trade in hate is what racism is.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but someone had to tell you. Willful ignorance will never be a justifiable reason for anything, especially racism.
