As a Nevada hunter, I urge Chairwoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick and Clark County commissioners to protect wildlife and stop rushing a resolution designating locations in the Nelson Hills, Eldorado Valley and other scenic public lands as off-highway vehicle recreation areas.
These historic places are critical wildlife habitat and already are open for responsible access to four-wheeling on designated existing routes. Sacrificing fragile Mojave Desert landscapes to high-speed, off-trail, off-road access drives away quiet recreation and hurts multiple uses such as hunting, hiking, camping, rock hounding, birding and four-wheel touring.
Off-road areas increase air pollution, crime, invasive weeds and fire risks. County staff and commissioners should slow down and open a true public process for national public lands conservation in Clark County.
