Absent a suitable explanation for global warming prior to the massive use of fossil fuels, the writer of the Jan. 6 letter “Nagging question about climate” cannot accept mankind’s contribution to the recent increase in global temperatures.
Overlooked is that an adequate explanation of an unrelated prior event is not needed. For example, should one reject treatment for a curable cancer because treatment of an unrelated cancer is less successful? Probably not.
There is overwhelming evidence that recent global warming is due to the burning of fossil fuel. Not only is there near perfect correlation between increases in the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and increasing global temperatures, the carbon dioxide increase parallels increasing fossil fuel consumption. Those denying these facts have yet to identify an alternate explanation for the measurable increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide.
