Letter to the editor:

Don’t celebrate Hoover’s name

Many of us lived through the days when our own federal government’s FBI, under the direction of J. Edgar Hoover, painted Martin Luther King Jr. as a grave threat to law and order. We did not know Hoover and his abuse of power were a far more serious threat to our nation.

This week, thanks to a return to sanity, we celebrated with a national holiday the birthday of our greatest civil rights leader and the father of nonviolent protest.

Few people now even recognize the name J. Edgar Hoover, the despicable egomaniac who abused the spirit of the law he was sworn to uphold.

It is long past time that our leaders stop engaging in the hypocrisy of honoring Hoover. Take his name off of the FBI building in Washington, D.C. If we can stop honoring Confederate generals, we can stop honoring this racist.
