LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

We can all do better for our children

I read with interest the Jan. 2 letter “We aren’t doing enough for kids,” wherein the author states that education is generally recognized as the primary path out of poverty, that we are not doing enough to improve education in Clark County and so generational poverty will continue.

I’ve been a resident of the area since 1969 and education has always been underfunded, with the casino industry successfully lobbying against tax increases for education. This is why individual and corporate stewardship is important, as our children are the future and we must all take responsibility to make this a better world for them.

So if you’re willing to invest in their future, I have two recommendations.

First, contribute financially or with your time as a mentor for Scholars at the nonprofit organization Core Academy (formerly known as the “I Have a Dream Foundation”) for underprivileged children. This organization provides after-school programming that educates, enriches and empowers young scholars. Last year, its senior class had a 100% graduation rate, with a majority of the graduates seeking secondary education.

Another way to get involved is with the Eighth Judicial Court CASA program. As a volunteer, you make a difference in children’s lives by serving as a court appointee advocating for the bests interest of those in foster care.

It’s time for all adults, especially parents, to take a page from Greta Thunberg’s playbook and be the best stewards for education, climate control, etc. It’s never too late, and it’s personally rewarding.
