“The quickest way to end a war is to lose it,” author George Orwell wrote years ago.
Orwell would cheer President Joe Biden for ending our 20-year war in Afghanistan and our brave men helping the helpless citizens escape the Taliban. They are the real heroes, just as Orwell was when he was seriously wounded while fighting for the Spanish republic — not these right wing stooges in their air-conditioned offices.
I met Bob MacNamara (the former defense secretary who played a crucial role in America’s involvement in Vietnam) in the 1970s in the posh Concorde lounge in New York waiting for our flight to London. We were sipping champagne and eating expensive nibbles. He didn’t have a care in the world.
