LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Debt ceiling hypocrisy again

Once again we are faced with Congress voting to raise the debt ceiling, a relic from 1917 whose purpose was to allow the Treasury Department to finance the war effort by issuing liberty bonds.

Without Congress passing a resolution to suspend the debt ceiling until December 2022, the government, unable to pay its bills, will shutdown.

The GOP has stated it will not vote for the resolution, thereby ensuring the government will shut down Oct. 1.

In 2017, Congress was faced with the debt ceiling and passed the resolution to suspend it with unanimous vote from the Democrats. What is the difference between 2017 and 2021? In 2017, Donald Trump was president and the GOP controlled both the House and Senate, whereas in 2021, Joe Biden is president and Democrats control both the House and Senate.

That is the difference. If Trump would have won in 2020, we would not even be talking about the government shutdown.

It is time for the GOP to put on its big boy pants and act like responsible adults.
