LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

How secure are our elections?

We have all been reading about the different ways former President Donald Trump tried to alter the 2020 presidential election results: phony electors, locating additional mysterious votes in Georgia, collecting the voting machines, etc.

The stories describe how and why Trump’s machinations were false and illegal. But would they have succeeded if then-Vice President Mike Pence had kowtowed to his running mate?

If Pence had bought into Trump’s conspiracy theories, would there now be a different man sitting in the White House? If the Georgia secretary of state had certified that Trump had won the state, could anyone have challenged him?

Just how close did America come to a rigged result? We have to analyze ways in which the great steal might have succeeded. People of integrity may have stepped up to stop the steal last time, but there is no guarantee that will happen the next time.

Our elections can’t be dependent on officials doing the right thing. Rules must be set in stone so there is no chance of someone bending them to change the results.
