LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

History can be uncomfortable

What makes the looney right uncomfortable? We know critical race theory does, but what else?

They don’t want their children to be made to feel bad in the classroom when slavery and its consequences on Black people are discussed. Does this include Native American genocide used in settling America? Do they want to prevent children from knowing that white Americans had an over 300-year economic, educational and individual-developmental lead over descendants of slaves and Native Americans?

Where does it end? In a story published Jan. 16, Charles Lee Bilberry talked about not being able to receive his diploma with white children because their parents’ objections. What happens when a white child reads this and asks her parents to explain? The parent would have to delve into tenets of critical race theory, I imagine, or perhaps simply tell the child it was a mistake and move on. But it wasn’t a mistake. It was part of the societal structure that defined limitations on what people of color enjoyed.

The truth is the looney right wants history that makes them feel good. Talking about critical race theory — something I’d never heard of until recently — doesn’t make certain people feel good about how this country came to be. My general nature dictates that I don’t offend, so please provide a list of banned topics that shouldn’t be discussed or written about in order to make you feel good. After all, that’s why we are here.
