LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Help is available for those hurting

What a great article about postpartum depression (“The faces of postpartum depression,” July 10). It shared the stories of four women who were experiencing postpartum depression, one of the maternal mental health disorders women may experience before, during and after childbirth.

Increasing awareness through sharing personal stories lets women know they are not alone if they are feeling like these moms. Equally important is knowing there are resources and support specifically for what they are experiencing.

Here are some of those resources:

• Maternal Mental Health Hotline: 833-853-6262, or 833-TLC-MAMA, accessible by phone or text 24/7 and staffed by trained providers in English and Spanish

• Postpartum Support International (PSI): postpartum.net

• Helpline: 1-800-944-4773 staffed by volunteers and accessible by phone or text, in English and Spanish.

In addition, a Nevada chapter of PSI has recently been established and will hold an event in October with Fit4Moms called Climb Out of the Darkness. This fun event to connect with families and friends to let them know they are not alone and there are local resources to help them cope with mental health challenges related to childbearing.

The writer is the postpartum support coordinator and a board member for the Nevada chapter of Postpartum Support International.
