Republicans such as Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona have been predicting or calling for a civil war if former President Donald Trump loses the 2024 election.
This isn’t just hyperbole: Republicans already called for and supported a violent attack against our Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. During the attack, Trump’s supporters carried signs and led chants comparing that attack to the Revolutionary War.
What Trump’s supporters seem to miss is that the Revolutionary War was fought to end the tyranny of a monarchy and replace it with democracy and self-determination. The MAGA mob was attacking the Capitol for the purpose of ending democracy and self-determination, and replacing it with the tyranny of a dictatorial autocrat.
Trump has promised that if he is re-elected, he will end 250 years of democracy and replace it with a government of people who are loyal only to him and not to the country. Trump has promised “retribution” and vowed to use the Department of Justice and the military against his political enemies.
I wonder if the MAGA mob really understands what is at stake if Trump is returned to office and I fear what they will do if he is defeated.
