Letter to the Editor:

Las Vegas’ growth is unsustainable

Some people seem to honestly think we as a city are exonerated from Colorado River water usage due to recent findings that cite agriculture as being the dominant user of the river’s water.

While Las Vegas has done a very good job in conserving water, we have a long way to go.

Since 2019, the area has welcomed 118,000 new residents. It is unrealistic to think we can sustain acceptable levels of water usage and still keep the pace of new construction.

We need slower growth, tempered and measured by a true moratorium on new construction, as many communities have done historically, especially in California.

Instead, though, some people warn that doing so would lead to economic disaster.

Sorry, but unmitigated growth is a greater disaster than benefit to the city, with the very real possibility of a serious water shortage for the existing businesses and residents of Las Vegas.

By reining in new housing and construction, we can continue to mitigate water use and take a step back in determining realistically just how much more growth we can service in regard to water needs in the future.
