Letter to the Editor:

Horses need a humane solution

KLAS 8 News Now did a segment in January on wild horses in Nevada being captured during a roundup by the Bureau of Land Management between Lovelock and Winnemucca. What it showed was inhumane and sickening.

Hooray for Reps. Dina Titus, D-Nev., and Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., for stepping up to try to pause an irresponsible operation. The new fiscal year will bring more roundups in New Mexico, Nevada, Wyoming, California, Arizona, Utah and Colorado.

Back in 2019, I watched the movie “The Mustang,” filmed at Nevada State Prison in Carson City, and I never forgot it.

Based on an actual rehabilitation program there, horses were rounded up and given to prisoners to be “gentled” and trained so they could be sold at auctions. Why, with all the prisons in this country, can’t this be done, with the horses given to police departments for patrol duties or used for riding academies for giving riding lessons, or for pets or race horses? This seems much more humane and responsible to me.

I have always loved horses. I grew up with them and something definitely needs to be done.
