Letter to the Editor:

Time to rethink baseball schedule

It’s cold and damp and I swear I saw a snowflake float by my frost-covered window this morning. What a perfect day for a ballgame. Better yet, let’s play two!

Major League Baseball is doing so many things well to speed up the game but doesn’t seem to have considered the weather, especially in the Midwest.

Is there a valid reason why baseball must start on or before April 1 and conclude with trick-or-treaters at our front door?

Baseball is an old game, but it doesn’t date back to Moses. I’m pretty sure those stone tablets didn’t demand a schedule that would include all four seasons.

When the rules committee gathers to consider next year’s calendar, it might try looking at it from a fan’s perspective. That is, if the crowd is more likely to catch pneumonia than a foul ball, maybe a change is in order.
