Letter to the Editor:

Ukraine must not be hung out to dry

Our Ukrainian brothers and sisters deserve substantial U.S. support. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been tireless supporters for Ukraine aid in Congress and with NATO leaders.

Harris has met six times with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy starting in February 2022, declaring that Russia committed “crimes against humanity” in Ukraine at the February 2023 Munich Security Summit. This June, she led the U.S. delegation at the Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland.

By contrast, former President Donald Trump on Feb. 22, 2022, described Russian President Vladimir Putin’s justification of invading Ukraine as “genius” and “savvy.” On Feb. 10 this year, he said he would encourage Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” to any NATO nation that does not contribute enough of its gross domestic product to defense spending.

At a Detroit rally on June 16, Trump promised to end Ukrainian aid “immediately” if elected. His running mate, JD Vance, wrote in The New York Times on April 12 arguing against any U.S. aid to Ukraine.

I urge voters to support Harris and other politicians who support vital Ukraine aid.
