Letter to the Editor:

President Joe Biden did right by the country

During the presidential primaries, polls indicated that over 70% of likely voters did not want to have a rematch of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. But that’s what we got. Trump started his campaign talking about retribution, fear and loathing, with a hint about being a dictator. Biden ran on the need to save the republic.

While Trump spoke about not having to vote again if he won, Biden struggled in the June 27 debate. With polls showing Trump leading, Biden still felt a strong need to “finish the job.” Out of the blue came former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who apprised Biden that he needed to make a decision. He announced his withdrawal from the race July 21 in a historic move.

Vice President Kamala Harris was chosen to carry on as the Democratic nominee, and she acquired a sufficient number of delegates to secure the nomination. The Constitution does not specify how the nominations for office are to be made.

Since then, there has been a veritable sea change in the attitude of the Democrat Party. Harris brought a palpable freshness to the campaign as she spoke of freedom, joy and a dynamic view of the future.

Polls show Harris with a slight lead, which bodes well for Biden’s long years of public service being capped by his own choice of Harris to be his successor. Conversely, we could go backwards with another old white guy who can’t get over his loss in 2020.
