LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Ripples of Dodd ruling continue

The recent court ruling in Alabama that an embryo is a child and that destruction of an embryo is wrongful death is the latest fallout of the U.S. Supreme Court’s overruling of Roe v. Wade.

Alabama takes that decision to even more intrusive and absurd lengths, and it’s a prelude to further government control over women’s reproductive decisions.

In addition to being emboldened by the Supreme Court’s Dodd ruling, states like Alabama are encouraged by GOP intentions to pass a nationwide abortion ban if they gain control of the Senate and keep their House majority.

Former President Donald Trump, the prohibitive favorite to lead the GOP presidential ticket this year, supports strict abortion restrictions. His campaign knows it’s an unpopular position, which is why it was so angry about Trump’s stance being leaked.

Nevada (like my state) grants women the right to choose, so maybe Alabama and other anti-choice states seem far away. Our state laws respecting reproductive rights won’t help, though, if Republicans are successful in November. Even Republicans who claim to take a more reasoned approach undoubtedly will fall in line with the far-right rather than risk the ire of their colleagues, just as we see with virtually every issue in the current Republican-led House.

The only way to avoid a national abortion ban and the further whittling away of women’s reproductive and overall health decisions will be to elect Democrats, including President Joe Biden and Sen. Jacky Rosen.
