Former Vice President Mike Pence saying Jan. 6 was not an insurrection begs the question: What was it?
Is this a new event that can now take place, during the count of electoral votes, in years to come? What weapons will be allowed? Are torches and pitchforks OK? Bear spray, homemade spears and metal barriers didn’t afford the visuals necessary to put on a really good show, regardless the number of injuries and deaths.
Will the losing president be given a nearby location to gather his supporters, no security required? Can we ensure that the outgoing president faces no penalty for several hours of inaction after fighting breaks out?
Can props be set up in advance, such as a gallows or guillotine? Everyone likes to be prepared for any possible outcome.
Who knows, maybe one of the parties will become efficient enough at rendering this event that the results will be the end of a peaceful transition of power and an end to democracy.
What should we call that?
