Letter to the Editor:

Ambition drove JD Vance's turn

Republican vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, greets delegates as he arrives on the floor during the first day of the 2024 Republican National Convention at the Fiserv Forum, Monday, July 15, 2024, in Milwaukee.

JD Vance did not flip-flop from a strong “never Trump” position to a strong “I love Trump” position because Donald Trump did such a great job as president.

He did a political 180 for the simple reason that the path to money, fame and power is much easier aligning with the former president than against him. Trump takes no hostages and can lie his way out of predicaments and into emoluments easier than any other scammer on earth.

All the personal effort it took to write a book and run for the U.S. Senate was devilishly hard stuff for Vance compared with being a loyal minion to Trump. All one has to do in this new role is wake up, play some golf and check out Truth Social to learn what today’s propaganda line is going to be.

And if it turns out that the Trump-Vance ticket takes a wrecking ball to American democracy, Vance will still be hugely satisfied that he was able to get more than his fair share of the kind of glory an ambitious man always wants. Let the republic be damned.
