Letter to the Editor:

Judicial system due for update

Hidden deep in the November election, there is a prize for American democracy.

If the presidency and Congress are of the same persuasion, they could legislatively update the 1869 Judiciary Act, which controls the federal judiciary system. That includes the Supreme Court.

The 155-year-old act can be updated, for example, to increase the Supreme Court to 13 members or require a higher voting threshold for decisions.

Revising the act could also include an ethics code, public transparency and any other updating to bring the justice system into the 21st century.

All we need to do is vote for a government that works for the American public.
