Letter to the Editor:

$80 million deal is bad policy

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

After 20 years of bitter legal fights, the Clark County Commission unanimously approved an $80 million deal with Gypsum Resources to allow construction of 3,500 homes overlooking the Red Rock Canyon conservation area. The property was not zoned for housing and is a critical part of a fragile national treasure.

One of commissioners said the settlement was “the best (we) can do under the circumstances.” I think it was the worst the commission could do. The best it could do is continue to fight for the preservation of a public trust.

The decision illustrates that one man with deep pockets and lots of legal eagles can walk over public interests. I think the deal is an incredibly shameful mark on our public representatives.
