Letter to the Editor:

Thomas flouts ethical practices

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, whose character and integrity have been in question from Day One, should recuse himself from all of Donald Trump’s court proceedings.

You don’t need a law degree to reasonably conclude that anyone whose wife was strongly advocating the overthrow the 2020 election should not be adjudicating the former president’s proceedings.

The majority of Americans, including many Republicans, have long taken a dim view of Thomas’ ethics. Over a period of more than two decades, wealthy right-wing Republican donors have lavished Thomas with gifts worth millions of dollars, and Thomas reported none of it.

Omitting a gift or a loan from a financial disclosure is the same as saying there was no gift or loan. And if anyone other than a Supreme Court justice had so falsified their financial disclosure forms, they would have been indicted or it would have at least triggered a criminal investigation.

Given his wife’s key role in high-level schemes to overthrow the 2020 election, as well Justice Thomas’ history of highly questionable personal moral standards and conduct, he should not partake in any court proceedings that could potentially influence who becomes the next president.

But there is little in Thomas’ past to suggest that he will do the honorable thing and recuse himself.
