Letter to the Editor:

Horses deserve better treatment

The Kentucky Derby has once again come and gone with all its fanfare and glory. I ask people to please look beyond the racetrack and recognize the cruelty that accompanies this tradition.

Few people hear about the number of young horses that get broken legs and other devastating injuries during training and are euthanized. They are probably the lucky ones, considering the hundreds that are just not fast or good enough to race and instead are loaded onto slaughterhouse trucks.

It is time people looked at horse racing for what it is: a blood sport. This is no sport but a travesty inflicted on innocent horses to entertain a few people. Society can stop this madness, because it is us who keep slaughterhouse trucks full, hauling these innocent beings to their horrific deaths. There are many other ways for people to be entertained.

I wanted to give a voice to the hundreds if not thousands of horses over the years that face unspeakable deaths to entertain a few. Hopefully soon this enterprise will come to an end, as a civilized society opens its eyes and sees it for what it is. Horses deserve better.
