Letter to the Editor:

Be loud in fight for abortion rights

It’s been two years since we learned that our right to abortion, which had been constitutionally protected for 50 years by Roe v. Wade, was to be overturned by the Supreme Court. I remember how angry I felt when I heard the news about the leaked decision. For several years I’d advocated to protect abortion rights and in one day, one moment, all of that work had come crashing down.

This theft of bodily autonomy, this denial of basic human rights won’t stop until it’s the law of the land everywhere in America. We should all be free to make our own decisions about our bodies, lives and futures without political interference.

Restrictions and bans are barbaric and out-of-step with public opinion. Last year, a Wall Street Journal poll said 9 out of 10 Americans support abortion access when a woman’s health is at risk from pregnancy.

That’s why I support the Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom ballot initiative campaign to protect abortion rights.

As someone who has had an abortion, I cannot stand to see others be denied the care I received when I needed it. Despite the stigma, condemnation and threats, I’m one of many who are speaking up. Doing so makes it easier for others to join us.

People who want to extinguish lifesaving care are loud and wrong. It’s time for the rest of us to get loud too. We can’t stop fighting until the disdain and danger no longer threaten our bodies and lives.
