    May 1, 2011

TORONTO — Anyone who’s familiar with Randy Couture knew he wouldn’t go out like this. The 47-year-old Couture was on the wrong side of a flooring front kick from former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida at UFC 129 at the Rogers Centre on Saturday night.

UFC 129 live blog: Both champions keep belts; Couture goes out with KO loss

    April 30, 2011

TORONTO — How the biggest event in UFC history is remembered will likely come down to personal preference. The three featured bouts at UFC 129 all ended with a defining image. Two champions atop the pound-for-pound rankings kept their titles while a legend had an inglorious end to a career. Many of the 55,000 fans at the Rogers Centre will recall Canadian superstar Georges St. Pierre standing on top of the 170-pound class once again. St. Pierre won his ninth straight and succeeded in defending his title for the sixth time against Jake Shields.

  • Lorenzo Fertitta: Randy Couture is a mixed martial arts pioneer, good friend

    April 30, 2011

The term “legend” is thrown around generously in professional sports. However, if you step back and think about the magnitude of the word “legend,” you can’t help but to wonder if it’s a bit abused. Legendary status to me means excelling at a level that is not only above your peers, but also higher than anyone has ever achieved. To me, it means winning multiple world titles, defeating the best competition of your time, all while blazing a trail and inspiring a nation of fans along the way.

UFC 129 weigh-in: Randy Couture nears end of ‘remarkable’ journey

    April 29, 2011

TORONTO — Randy Couture is the only headlining fighter on Saturday’s UFC 129 card who can claim to have true perspective on what the mega-event means to the world’s top fighting organization. Friday’s weigh-in serves as a perfect example why. Fans filled the Ricoh Coliseum, which has a capacity of 7,000, and only standing room was available.

Jose Aldo says no one has seen him at the top of his game yet

    April 29, 2011

TORONTO — UFC President Dana White’s eyes still widen when talking about Jose Aldo’s performance a year ago against Urijah Faber at WEC 48. It was the moment White and most others around mixed martial arts started considering the 24-year old Brazilian one of the top three pound-for-pound fighters in the world. Aldo dominated the WEC superstar, winning every round en route to a unanimous decision victory.

UFC 129 Notebook: Lyoto Machida also asked for Randy Couture

    April 29, 2011

TORONTO — According to Lyoto Machida, he wanted to face Randy Couture as badly as “The Natural” wanted to fight him. Couture has asked for a bout against Machida for at least two years. But it was more than the 47-year old’s persistence that finally got the matchup as one of the featured contests at UFC 129, which airs on pay-per-view at 6 Saturday from the Rogers Centre.

    April 29, 2011

Randy Couture jogs into the middle of a sea of nearly 50 flying fists and immediately adds two more. It’s the start of evening practice for a handful of professionals and hopefuls at Xtreme Couture gym in Las Vegas, which means a round of shadowboxing is in order for everyone to get loose.

Randy Couture’s Greatest Hits: A history of defying the odds

    April 29, 2011

TORONTO — Randy Couture could conceivably never open his mouth during a press conference and still address what everyone wanted to hear at this point. All he’d have to do is press "play" on a recorder with the audio from one of his many pre-fight media appearances in the past. The theme from most of Couture’s fights during his 14-year career has been exactly the same. He’s the old legend challenging a younger hotshot who’s billed as quicker, stronger, faster or all of the above.

Randy Couture hasn’t allowed injuries to slow him down

    April 29, 2011

Since announcing his retirement from mixed martial arts last week, Randy “The Natural” Couture has repeatedly said he made the decision because he didn’t want a serious injury to dictate the end of his career. Perhaps the 47-year old Couture feels fortunate to have escaped such situations throughout his career in the UFC. In a sport where injuries with long recovery periods are as common as leg kicks, Couture has stayed remarkably healthy. “The guy is pushing 50 and never gets injured,” UFC President Dana White said. “It’s incredible.”

    April 28, 2011

Randy Couture’s career helped open doors for other fighters, inspire another generation

    April 27, 2011

With sweat dripping down Randy’s Couture’s face, his form-fitting shirt drenched from a demanding workout and sticking to his body, and a few bumps and scratches obvious on his forehead, the legendary mixed martial artist appeared in no shape to be photographed. Couture, in preparation for his farewell fight Saturday against Lyoto Machida during UFC 129 in Toronto, was in the middle of one of his two-a-day training sessions last week when he spotted 6-year-old Darian Castillo observing a few feet from the cage at Xtreme Couture.
