Former minor leaguer now coaching with Boulder City Little League squad

Like most young children, Boulder City's Al Kermode dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player. He went through the Little League ranks, played in high school and college and was drafted. Kermode played in the minor leagues from 1992 to 1999.
Now, he's spending time coaching Boulder City Little League's Diamondbacks in the league's Majors division.

The leading scorer in high school boys basketball this season might come as a surprise to most.
Trinity guard and Henderson resident Budweiser Hawkins III averaged 26.2 points per game to lead the valley and he's only a junior. Most fans probably aren't familiar with him because he played in the 1A classification, for schools with less than 169 students.

The Boulder City High girls basketball team will face Moapa Valley in the first round of the 3A Southern League tournament on Feb. 19.
The teams split the regular season series with each squad winning at home. Boulder City won the first game 55-41 on Jan. 9, while Moapa Valley captured the second game 46-36 on Jan. 30.

With seven wrestlers picking up individual 3A Southern League titles, Boulder City High easily captured the 2009 league tournament held in Boulder City on Saturday.
The Eagles scored 222 points to best Virgin Valley, which took second place with 160 points. Moapa Valley was third with 140 and Faith Lutheran took fourth with 64.5 points.
Late start to racing not slowing award-winning cyclist

Danny Kam is full of energy.
He channels most of that to running his bike shop, Nu Vision Cyclery, 8447 W. Lake Mead Boulevard. Other times he is using it to propel him to success as a racer.
Kam, 30, is just starting his second season of full-time bicycle racing, and if last year is any indicator of success, he'll be garnering a lot of attention. He won 12 of 22 Southern California/Nevada Racing Association events he entered in 2008.

The Boulder City High graduate won her first race of the season, capturing the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 10.31 seconds, at the Bengal Shootout at Idaho State in Pocatello, Idaho, on Jan. 17.

Boulder City's Andrew Kovacevich, 8, got off to an impressive start this racing season.
He took second place in the Best in the Desert's Parker 250 Mini-Mini 7- to 9-year-old 100cc Mini-Mini quad division on Jan. 9 in Parker, Ariz. The race was the only Best in the Desert event for children younger than 12 in 2009.
