LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Nevada State College deserving of kudos

Regarding the Las Vegas Sun’s July 5 story “Henderson college’s grad rate disappoints”:

When Nevada State College opened in 2002, it marked the first time Nevada boasted a three-tiered higher education system and, along with it, enhanced education opportunities for Nevadans.

Although NSC’s establishment was controversial, and has become controversial again, it was needed to allow the state’s other institutions to better serve their missions. It is currently doing just that — even if its graduation rate does not yet match that of California’s more established schools.

But creating change takes time — especially in the face of adversity.

I am proud to have been a part of NSC’s first freshman class in 2002. Although NSC had few resources and even less community support in its first years, its spirit couldn’t be matched. The campus was charged with an energy that comes from starting something new, and everyone was committed to supporting its mission to provide quality education in needed fields.

While earning my bachelor’s degree at NSC, I received top-notch, personalized instruction and guidance from my professors as well as my faculty adviser, which allowed me to push myself to earn my bachelor’s degree in just three years (with a 3.98 GPA). It was that same support, coupled with the first-rate education I received, that gave me the confidence to pursue my current goal of earning my Ph.D.

Each year NSC continues to grow — in student body and in programs and degrees offered. I for one am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Nevada State College. I know it will be good.
