Letter to the editor:

Barr speaks out of turn

Attorney General William Barr went on and on in recent speeches at Notre Dame and at the Federalist Society, judging the current tone of the land: “This is not decay, this is organized destruction; secularists and their allies have marshaled all the forces of mass communication, popular culture, the entertainment industry and academics in an unremitting assault on religion and traditional values.”

Is this a plea for a savior?

The “world” has already been judged and found to be quite dangerous. By the time of Constantine, when the church was first integrated into the state — which appears to be what Barr is looking for — there were disastrous consequences both for the state and the church for 1,500 years.

Maybe Barr hasn’t heard the rest of the story, in which the answer is provided in Romans 3:21-24. “But now a righteousness from God apart from the Law, has been made known to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of god, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”

The changes are not achieved by governmentally imposed religious dogma or “moral discipline,” but by the graciously offered spiritual rebirth of the individual. Perhaps if Barr could accept a spiritual, as opposed to a secular/religious solution, he would be relieved of his burdensome concern.
