In their first weeks on the road, the Boulder City Police Department’s license plate readers haven’t put anyone behind bars. They haven’t spotted any stolen cars or suspected drug runners cruising through town. But Officer Thomas Healing, who drives one of the two patrol cars equipped with the new technology, has discovered that one of the vehicles in the Police Department’s fleet has a license number that matches a stolen vehicle in another state.

Reduced demand for water has allowed the Southern Nevada Water Authority to scale back its third intake project at Lake Mead, reducing the cost by $296 million — for now anyway. Engineers think the pump on the second intake, the “second straw,” can do the job at current demand, water authority spokesman J.C. Davis said.

Boulder City is beginning a long process to recycle its wastewater. A study was recently completed laying out the alternatives to the city’s current system, which is sending effluent from the city’s wastewater treatment plant out two channels into the desert of the Eldorado Valley, where it evaporates and seeps into the ground before it reaches U.S. 95.

City Councilman Duncan McCoy should have been allowed to vote in July on a bailout of the Boulder Dam Hotel, the Nevada Commission on Ethics has ruled. The commission on a 7-1 vote agreed with McCoy that his past position as a board member of the Boulder City Museum and Historical Association, which owns the hotel, and his recent contribution of $1,000 to save the hotel, which was in danger of closing, were not reason enough for him to abstain.

About 40 people gathered on a dirt lot in downtown Boulder City Wednesday night to show support for health care reform. The vigil was one of more than 300 planned as part of a nationwide effort by the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org. A second vigil was held at the same time in front of University Medical Center in Las Vegas. Those who had gathered in Boulder City carried candles and signs and told stories that illustrated the ways they see the current health care system failing.

Brianne Perkins came home to Boulder City Saturday with an escort of six police cars and two ambulances that stopped traffic from Railroad Pass to her home on Sunrise Circle. For a block before her house, yellow ribbons and welcome home signs adorned a fence along Bristlecone Drive. More greeted her at the two-story brick house. “I’m getting spoiled,” said the 21-year-old Boulder City High School graduate who nearly died in April after a crash on Interstate 70 while on her way to her grandparents’ house.
Bootleg Canyon Park drainage project under way

Heavy equipment is rolling at Bootleg Canyon Park in Boulder City to complete a drainage project that will turn the former Boulder Sand and Gravel pit into a detention basin. Pipe has to be laid through the park and the Animal Shelter grounds to provide an outlet for water to escape the basin after a heavy rain, Regional Flood Control District General Manager Gale Fraser said. The system will connect with drainage that runs near Veterans Memorial Drive to disperse storm water safely, according to plans.

Boulder City Police arrested a husband and wife on drug charges this morning during a raid on what they described as a “party house” in the 1700 block of Red Mountain Drive. Curtis Shafer, 30, and Jenna Shafer, 24, were being charged with possession of methamphetamine, maintaining a house for drug use or sale and conspiracy to maintain a house for drug use or sale, all felonies, along with 34 misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

Crews extinguish wildland fire near Mesquite

A wildland fire in Mesquite was doused about 30 hours after it broke out along the Virgin River. The fire, which covered about 4.2 acres along the river just 800 feet from homes, was contained by 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Kirsten Cannon said. The fire never spread beyond the size federal firefighting crews found when they responded about 3 p.m. Monday, she said.

School and health officials are preparing for the spread of the H1N1 swine flu virus once the school year begins on Monday. The Southern Nevada Health District has tracked the spread of the flu strain through surveillance of local pediatricians’ offices during the summer and found that about half of the cases of flu-like symptoms were the result of the H1N1 virus, Dr. Lawrence Sands, chief health officer, said.

Final work is complete on an LED sign on Nevada Way at the turnoff to Hoover Dam. Now, in addition to “Welcome to Boulder City,” the sign gives the time and temperature and short messages about events in town. Two bronze statues of bighorn sheep and desert landscaping complete the look of the corner.
