Bishop Gorman set things straight Friday night, avenging their loss last season against Hamilton High of Arizona in a big way, winning 45-0 at home this time around.

There have been few nights like this in the Bishop Gorman football program’s rise from state contender to national power.

The Gaels against Hamilton High of Arizona last season gave up 18 points in the final minute of a one-point loss, a sequence where they failed to recover a pair of onside kicks and then allowed a 2-point conversion for their lone loss of the season. The wild ending was magnified because the game was televised by ESPN.

Gorman triumph over Hamilton was part of the Polynesian Football Classic. Arbor View at 7 p.m. Saturday plays Mountain Pointe of Arizona in the event.

The game continues a challenging schedule for Gorman to open the season — after all, the Gaels last week played in Hawaii. And two weeks ago, they lost a game at the buzzer against Mater Dei of California in a battle of top-5 national teams.

Gorman isn’t the only Nevada school facing a tough out-of-state opponent.

Liberty is in Texas to face Atascocita, Faith Lutheran takes on Bakersfield Christian — coach by Darren Carr, the brother of the Raiders’ Derek — and Canyon Springs hosts Clayton Valley of California.

The local slate is highlighted by a class 5A showdown between host Desert Pines and Foothill, while Legacy and Centennial square off each looking for their first win of the season. In the class 4A, defending state champion Silverado faces Sierra Vista, and in the class 3A, defending state champion Moapa Valley expects a close game against Slam Academy.
