About 20 high school football programs throughout Southern Nevada will begin their season tonight with the same goal: Winning a championship.
That hope is a reality for the Coronado Cougars, who host Cimarron-Memorial in a battle of class 4A opponents.
There is no questioning that defending state champion Silverado is the team to beat in the 4A, as the Skyhawks are coming off an undefeated season in 2021 where they won 11 of 12 games by more than 20 points.
That close game came against Coronado.
While Silverado pulled away and won by 18 points, the Cougars say that night showed they aren’t far behind. We’ll surely learn more tonight — and about more than Coronado.
In the large school classification, defending state champion Bishop Gorman begins its title defense by hosting Corner Canyon of Utah in the first of five games against out of state competition for a program ranked in the top-10 nationally.
If Gorman goes undefeated, which would include a game next week against top-ranked Mater Dei of California, the Gaels would be in the conversation to be the mythical national champions. It’s a title they won in three consecutive seasons beginning in 2014.
Gorman, of course, will face fierce competition locally.
Liberty, which is ranked No. 2 in the Sun’s preseason poll, opens the season by hosting Palo Verde. Third ranked Arbor View is playing visiting Snow Canyon of Utah, will Desert Pines opens on the road at Orem of Utah.
